JIS G4051 is a Japanese standard that specifies medium carbon steels for machine structural use. Medium carbon steels are steels that contain 0.3% to 0.6% of carbon and 0.6% to 1.65% of manganese. They have higher strength and hardness than low-carbon steel, but lower ductility and toughness than high-carbon steel. JIS G4051 classifies medium carbon steels into four grades: S35C, S45C, S50C, and S55C. These grades vary in their chemical composition and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. For example, S35C has good strength and toughness, S45C has high strength and wear resistance, S50C has high hardness and abrasion resistance, and S55C has very high strength and hardness.
